As you may know, I have spent significant parts of my life in Japan and as an academic, work on political-historical-social issues pertaining to modern Japan. This has often led me to look enviously upon the capacity of many Koreans for robust expression of their political (including economic) views, in contrast to the now (since the 1970s) longstanding quietude of Japanese.

I had been looking with dismay at the reversal of the truly dazzling strides taken toward Korean democracy under the regime of President Lee Myung-bak. Then came the self-chosen death of the late President Roh Moo-hyun.  I happened to be in Tokyo at the time; it was only upon my return to Chicago, through conversation with Korean friends--colleague and students--and witnessing their grief and regret about their own perhaps too ready disillusionment about President Roh Moo-hyun that I came to understand the magnitude of his gesture. The treatment of the press in Japan and the US have seemed woefully inadequate.

I couldn't help feeling an instant parallel with the US, in terms of the high expectations raised by President Obama and therefore the potential for easy disillusionment, and I take President Roh's death as a caution to Americans, too.

But the effort by Korean citizens now protesting, and those who crafted the thoughtful statement for democracy in South Korea has its own significance for us, broadly speaking. I am reminded of a thought attributed to the late Japanese political scientist Maruyama Masao: that democracy itself is perpetual revolution.

Sincerely yours,

Norma Field
