아름다운 바다, 그보다 아름다운 사람들
"여수가 아름다운 것은 사람들이 아름답기 때문이에요."
(Beautiful sea, more beautiful People
"Yeosu is beautiful because of its people.")


내려갈 때 보았네.
올라갈 때 보지 못한
그 꽃.
(I saw it, when coming down.
The flower I did not see,
On the way up.)

지난해에 노벨 문학상 후보까지 오른 고은의 '그 꽃'이라는 시예요. 뭔가 다가오는 게 있지 않아요? '올라갈 때' 보지 못했는데 '내려갈 때'는 '그 꽃'을 보았다는 그 말에, 우린 뭉클해지던데…….
(The title of the poem above is "The Flower". It was written by Go Eun, a famous Korean poet nominated for the 2010 Nobel Prize for Literature. When reading the poem, does something come to mind? "On the way up", he could not see the flower but was able to see it "when coming down". We were filled with emotion by this.)

사실 우리도 주변을 살필 겨를도 없이 대학만 쳐다보며 공부만 했어요. 그러다가 세계의 젊은이들에게 2012여수세계박람회를 소개하느라 우리 고향 여수를 두루 다니면서 '보게' 된 게 많아요. 그 가운데 '사람'을 보게 되었어요. 오늘은 꽃보다 아름다운 '사람'을 찾아 시장으로 가볼까 하는데요.
(We have had no time to think about anything but preparing for the university entrance exam. Through this trip introducing the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea to the young people of the world, I experienced lots of things about Yeosu. I especially noticed the 'people' of Yeosu. Today, we are going to the traditional markets in Yeosu to find 'peolple' more beautiful than flowers.)


"시장에 갔더니 '살아 있는 그릇'이 우리를 맞아 주네요."
("Living bowls' welcame us.)

꽃보다 아름다운 사람이라더니, 웬 시장이냐고요? 그래요. 우리도 처음엔 그랬어요. 시장은 뭔가 촌스럽고 투박하고 거칠고, 아무튼 세련되지 않은 곳이라는 생각을 가지고 있었거든요. 그런데 아니었어요. 대형 마트에서는 느낄 수 없는 진짜 삶이 거기 있었거든요. 그것도 눈물겹도록 아름다운 삶이.
(You might think that it is weird to go to the traditional markets to find people more beautiful than flowers. At first, we thought the same as you. We thought that traditional markets were not luxurious places but old-fashioned and rough. But this was definitely not true. There was a real life there which we could not feel at the major supermarkets such as E-Mart or Lotte-Mart. Lives so beautiful that they bring tears to our eyes.)

여기가 바로 서시장이에요. 그런데 이게 뭐냐고요? 옹기예요. 옹기는 찰흙으로 빚어 불가마에서 구워낸 그릇인데, 옹기 속은 흙의 성질을 그대로 간직하고 있어요. 그래서 우리는 옹기를 '숨 쉬는 항아리'라고 부르기도 하죠. 아, 그러고 보니 "살아 있는 바다, 숨 쉬는 연안"이라는 엑스포 주제와도 통하네요. 그래서 옹기가 문 앞까지 나와서 우리를 맞아 주는가 보네요.
(This is the West Market. The market is located on the west side of Yeosu. That is why people call it West Market. Do you know what those are in the picture? They are Onggi. Onggi are earthenware, made of clay and baked in a kiln. The inside of the Onggi has the properties of soil. That's why we call Onggi 'breathing pottery'. Therefore, we believe there is a connection between this 'breathing pottery' and the theme of the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, "The living Ocean and Coast"(in Korean the living ocean and breathing coast.). These Onggi are lined up to the door as if welcoming us.


"시장에 갔더니 여수 '아짐씨'들이 거기 계셨어요."
("Yeosu 'Ajimssi' in the markets.")

여수에는 제삿날 같은 집이 정말 많았어요. 한 배 타고 바다에 나갔다가 함께 돌아가시기도 했고, 여순사건 때는 또 수많은 사람들이 같은 날 같은 시에 돌아가시기도 했으니까요. 문제는 우리네 할아버지들이 그렇게 떠나고 난 뒤, 그 집안을 누가 지켜냈을까요? 바로 여수 '아짐씨'들이에요.
(In Yeosu, there are many families that perform Jesa, an ancestral memorial ceremony on the same day. There are some reasons for this. The people were all lost at sea together because of a bad accident. Furthermore, October 19th memorializes the beginning of the 'Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion', in which over 2,000 civilians were killed by government forces. Who do you think supported these families without breadwinners? The wives did. We called them Ajimssi)




족발집에서 우리는 여수 아짐씨를 만났어요. "서울에서 장충동 족발이 유명할 때제. 여수 사람들은 족발이란 걸 잘 몰랐어. 그래서 저질러 부렀는디 대박이 났제." 족발을 썰면서 아짐씨는 신이 났어요. "옛날에는 없이 살아 막노동하다가 배고파서 이곳에 들러 족발에다 국밥 한 그릇 뚝딱하고 가면 천만금도 안부러웠제." 수십 년 동안 이곳에서, 큰 솥에 사골 국물을 끓여서 그냥 족발을 삶아내기만 한 아짐씨에게서 우리는 '아름다운 여수 사람'을 만날 수 있었어요.
(We met one Ajimssi in a Jokbal (pork foot in English) restaurant. She told us "when Jangchungdong was famous for pork foot in Seoul, Yeosu people didn't know what Jokbal was. But I started to sell them and it was a big success." She was excited to tell us this while cutting Jokbal. "In the old days, poor and hungry people would drop by these restaurants and had pork feet with soup after a hard day's work." With this Ajimssi who for the past several decades has cooked Jokbal and Sagol soup here, we were able to meet one beautiful Yeosu person.


"우리네 사람살이 가까이에는 '죽음'도 있지요."
("Death is in the midst of our life.")

먹어 보니 어때요? 달콤한 양념에 쫄깃한 식감은 얼마나 기막힌지, 젤라틴 성분이 풍부하여 피부 미용과 노화 방지에 얼마나 좋은지, 말해 무엇하겠어요. 이제 배도 든든하니 찬찬히 서시장을 둘러볼까요. 산에서 난 것들, 들에서 난 것들, 바다에서 난 것들은 모두 시장에 있지요.
(Now I know you are all dying to know what the delicious-looking food tastes like. It is so tasty. I bet many of you love that which is chewy and savory. Also, it contains a lot of gelatin good for skin care and anti-aging. Now let's have a look around the West Market. There are various foods from the mountains, fields and the sea surrounding Yeosu in the market.)



그런데 이건 뭐예요? 아, 이건 짚신이에요. 가는 새끼를 꼬아 만든 신이지요. 옛날에는 늘 신던 신발이었는데, 요즘이야 짚신을 신는 사람이 어디 있겠어요. 그러면 짚신은 어디에다 쓰느냐고요? 죽은 이에게 짚신을 신겨 보내드리지요. 그래서 시신을 모시는 상여 한 모퉁이에는 짚신을 매달아 놓기도 하지요. 이렇게 삶 가까이 죽음이 있는 것 보니, 조금 쓸쓸하지요.
(By the way, what's this? Oh, these are Jipsin. They are shoes made from twisted pieces of straw rope. In the old days, people used to wear them but these days nobody does. You might wonder where people use these. At a funeral, people put the shoes on the deceased and we can see the Jipsin dangling from the corner of the coffin. Now you can see death is in the midst of our life. A little lonely, right?)


"한복집에도 여수 아짐씨가 있었어요."
("Yeosu Ajimssi at the Hanbok store")

서시장에서 5분쯤 걸어가면, 중앙시장이 나오죠. 여수의 재래 시장 가운데 가장 늦게 생겼어요. 1949년 10월 목조 단층 건물로 시작해서 현재는 여수의 백화점식 시장으로 거듭났지요. 이곳엔 없는 게 없어요. 이불, 가방, 신발, 옷, 화장품, 타월 등등.
(A five minute walk from the West Market is the Jungang Market. This is the latest among the traditional market in Yeosu. It is a one story wooden building and was built in October 1949. And now it is organized like a department store. You can buy anything here: clothing, cosmetics, bags, shoes, blankets, towels, etc. If you can think it, they have it)





중앙시장 오른쪽 정문을 들어서면 한복집이 있어요. 이곳엔 전통 한복만을 만들면서 평생을 보낸, 일흔네 살 잡수신 할마이가 있어요. 40년이 훨씬 넘게 바느질을 했다니까, 대단하시지요. 그런데 할마이 성이 허씨인데, '정씨한복'이라고 하네요. 왠가 여쭈어 보았더니, 할아버지 성이 정씨라네요. 말을 붙여 보니 새색시처럼 수줍어하시면서 고된 세월을 들려주시는 모습이 아주 예쁘셨어요.
(There are Hanbok(Korean traditional costume) stores on the right when entering the right main entrance of the Jungang market. Here is an old lady who has spent her whole life making Hanbok for over 40 years. The name of the store is 'Jeongssi Korean traditional costume'. I asked her why she named it 'Jeong' insead of 'Heo' which is her family name. Smiling softly, she explained that she named the store her husband's last name. With considerable shyness she told us her impressive life story. )


"우리 아짐씨가 만든 회 한번 드셔 보실래요?"
("Would You like some raw fish?")

이제 중앙시장을 다 둘러보았으니 수산물 시장으로 가볼까요? 입구에 들어서자마자 들리는 소리, "생선 사시우, 싱싱한 생선 사시우." 억척 아짐씨들의 우렁찬 목소리가 들리지요. 보통 이십 년 넘게 생선을 친구삼아 장사를 한 분들이시죠. 감성돔, 광어, 농어, 가자미, 쥐치, 하모 등등 많기도 하지요.
(Now, let's go to the fish market. Entering the market, we could hear loud voices everywhere. "Here are plenty of fresh fish" "Get the freshest one here." These people selling fish have also worked here for over 20 years. There are diverse fish such as black porgies, halibuts, bass, flat fish, eel and so on.)




새벽 4시에 문을 열어 저녁 7시까지 생선과 친구 삼아 지내고 들어가는 아짐씨를 만났어요. 피곤할 법도 한데 웃음이 가득해서 말을 붙여 보았지요. "아짐씨, 고생 많으세요." "아니여, 재미있어." "힘들지 않으세요?" "힘들지 않다면 거짓말이고. 하지만 옛날에는 대야에 생선 담아서 쪼그리고 앉아 장사를 했어. 겨울이면 얼마나 추운지 몰라 손도 발도 다 얼었어. 그때 비하면 지금은 살 만하제." 회를 썰면서 아짐씨는 내내 웃고 계셨어요.
(I met a woman who works from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. She must have been tired but she was wearing a big smile on her face. I asked her "You must be exhausted. Isn't it hard to work all day long?" She said, "It would be a lie to say that I'm not tired. But I am happy with my work. In my day, I sold fish squatting on the street with a plastic container filled with fish. In the winter, my hands were numb from the cold. Compared to that, this is nothing" The entire story she was smiling, slicing raw fish.)


"아침에 교동시장에 가 보세요, 여수 아짐씨들을 만날 수 있어요."
("Go to the Gyodong market, you can see Yeosu Ajimssi")

삶이 무료해지거든 아침 일찍 교동시장을 가면 활력을 얻을 수 있어요. 새벽 5시 반 첫차를 타고 돌산에서, 화양에서, 덕양에서 직접 생산한 농수산물을 팔기 위해 모인 아짐씨들이 시장에서 좋은 자리를 차지하려고 달려가는 모습을 보면, 사는 게 얼마나 힘겹고도 아름다운지 알 수 있어요.
(When you get bored with your life, go to the Gyodong market then you can get refreshed. People from Dolsan, Hwayang, Deokyang catch the first train at 5:30a.m. and rush to the market to get the best place for sale. With this scenery you can see how tough and beautiful life is.)




그런데 그 아짐씨들 사이에 푸성귀를 파는 할마이를 만났어요. 매일 돌산 백초에서 첫차를 타고 깻잎, 솔잎가루, 텃밭 야채 등을 가지고 와서 파신다고 하셨어요. 특히 솔잎을 갈아서 만든 솔잎가루는 위장에 좋다며 많이 줄 테니 살 것을 권하셨어요. "연세가 어떻게 되세요?"라고 묻자 두 손을 펼치며 8학년 5반이라고 말씀하시더군요.
(I met an old lady selling vegetables. She catches the first bus from Baekcho everyday and sells sesame leaves, pine needle powder, and various vegetables from her garden. She said pine needle powder is good for the stomach and asked me to buy some. When I asked her age she answered gesturing with her hands, "85 years old.")

외국인들에게 여수를 소개하는데, 꼭 시장을 포함시켜야 하느냐 이런저런 말들이 많았어요. 좀 더 반듯하고 화려하고 세련된 곳이 얼마든지 있는데, 굳이 전통 시장을 소개할 필요가 있겠느냐는 의견도 있었거든요.
(There was a disagreement among us on which places to visit for this project. Some of us said there are more attractive and wonderful places to show. Why should the markets be included in an introduction of Yeosu to foreigners?)

하지만 이 투박한 시장 사람들이 여수를 지켜낸 아름다운 사람이라는 것을 가서 보며 절감하였어요. 서시장이든, 중앙시장이든, 수산물시장이든, 교동시장이든. 특히, 새벽 6시에 교동시장에 모여든 아짐씨들이 무려 600명이 넘는다고 하니까, 놀라실 거예요. 이게 바로 끈질긴 여수의 힘이에요. 그 힘으로 우리는 엑스포도 성공으로 이끌고 말 거예요.
(However through this experience, we realized truly how beautiful the people working in the market are. You will be particularly surprised to know that at 6 a.m. over 600 Ajimssi come to the Gyodong Market to sell their wares. This is an example of Yeosu persistence. This persistence will lead the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea to a success.)

시인 나태주는 '풀잎'을 이렇게 노래했는데, 우리는 바로 여수를 지키는 우리 아짐씨들에게 이 시를 바치고 싶어요. 아니, 여수 사람들에게 이 시를 바치고 싶어요.
