여니 수니와 함께 떠나는 여수 여행ㆍ12
(Trip to Yeosu with "Yeony and Suny", Yeosu Expo's Mascots⋅12)


"천국행 티켓은 아닙니다." 무슨 말이냐고요? 말 그대로예요. 천국에 갈 수 있는 티켓은 아니란 말이죠. 하지만 실망하지 마세요. 30달러면 천국 대신 지구를 여행할 수 있는 티켓이 있거든요. 그것도 지구 위에 있는 100개가 넘는 나라를 일주할 수 있는 티켓이거든요. 그게 뭐냐고요? 바로 엑스포 입장권.
("It is not a ticket for heaven." What am I talking about? It is literal. It does not mean the ticket can go to heaven. But don't be disappointed. There is a ticket that let's you travel all around the globe instead of heaven for thirty-dollars. And you can travel to more than 100 countries. What is it? It is the Expo admission ticket.)

보통권으로 어른은 3만3000원, 청소년은 2만5000원, 어린이나 노인은 1만9000원이니, 이보다 싸게 지구를 여행할 수 있겠어요? 하지만 박람회장이 워낙 방대해 하루이틀에 보기 벅차니까, 2일권(5만500원)이나 3일권(6만5500원)을 사서 알뜰하게 관람하세요.
(Tickets are 33,000 won for adults, 25,000 won for students and 19,000 won for children. Can you travel the globe more cheaply than this? But the vast fairground is difficult to see in a day or two, so buying 2 (50,500 won) or 3 (65,500 won) tickets is frugal.)

"지구 여행은 국제관에서 끝낼 수 있어요."
("We can finish global trip at the International Pavilion.")

바다를 주제로 하는 여수 엑스포답게 국제관은, 안개 속에 보이는 다도해의 섬들을 본떠서 만들었대요. 태평양과 대서양, 인도양으로 나누어 국가관을 배치하여, 3개 대양을 항해한다는 느낌이 들게요. 오늘은 태평양과 대서양을 향해 떠나 볼까요.
(As Yeosu Expo has the theme of the ocean, the International Pavilion is styled after islands of archipelago in fog. As it is divided into the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, we feel as if we voyaged in these three oceans.)

"태평양을 시원하게 항해해 볼까요."
("Let's go to the Pacific.")

태평양으로 떠나 보죠. 우선, 참가국 중 가장 큰 전시관을 자랑하는 미국관이 눈에 확 들어오네요. 국제관 중에 줄을 서서 기다리는 몇 개 안 되는 관이기도 하지요.
(Let's go to the Pacific. First, we can see the American Pavilion which is the biggest pavilion of the participating nations. It is one of the few pavilions that keeps people waiting in the line for the International Pavilions.)


미국관에 들어가니, 워터 스크린에 오바마 미국 대통령이 나오네요. 환경 오염과 기후 변화에 대한 미국의 개선 의지를 밝히면서, "여수에 오신 것을 환영합니다"라고 인사를 하는 장면이 인상적이지요.
(In the American Pavilion, Barack Obama appears on a water screen. It's impressive that he says "Welcome to Yeosu.", revealing his volition for improving environmental pollution and the climate change in the United States.)

내부 영상관으로 자리를 옮기자, 때로는 아름다운 바다가, 때로는 무서운 바다가 화면을 가득 채우네요. 그리고 그곳에서 바다와 공존하는 다양한 미국 사람들을 만날 수 있고요. "This is my ocean!" 이라 외치는 그들을 보며, 우리와 바다는 서로 긴밀히 연결되어 있다는 것을 배울 수 있지요.
(Moving to the inner theater, you can see a beautiful and sometimes dreadful ocean on the screen. We can meet people from other countries coexisting with the ocean. Watching the people exclaim "This is my ocean.", we learn that the ocean is close to all of us.)


이제, 태평양을 사이로 미국과 겨루는 중국으로 가 봐요. 중국관은 '하나의 바다, 하나의 가정'이라는 전시 주제 아래 지속가능한 해양 개발 방안을 보여 주고 있어요. 해양의 개발과 보호, 해양 과학과 기술, 해양 문화 등 3개의 핵심 콘텐츠를 중심으로 전시하는데, 마치 바다 속에 있는 듯한 느낌을 주는 돔 형식의 영상이 인상적이에요.
(Now, let's go to the China Pavilion, which competes economically with the United States. Under the theme of "One sea" or "One home", the China Pavilion shows us methods of ocean development, displaying three main contents; ocean science, technology, and ocean culture. It is very impressive, and make us feel as if we are in the sea.)

그런데 동그란 영상물에 무엇이 들어 있는지 아세요? 자신이 생각하는 바다에 대해 그려놓은 아이들 그림이 들어 있어요. 생물과 인간이 함께 공존하는 바다에 대한 그림이지요. 하지만 오늘날 문명이 발달하면서 바다가 아프고 있어요. 이 아픈 바다를 어떻게 구할까요? 그 방법이 궁금하시면 중국관으로 오세요.
(By the way, do you know what is in the circle? There are pictures of seas that children painted about what they think sea as. They are the very pictures about seas where human beings and ocean life coexist. However, the seas have been hurt since we promoted technological development. How can we save the sick seas? If you wonder about the solution, come to the China Pavilion.)


국제관에서 제일 궁금했던 곳은 일본관이에요. 지난해 쓰나미에 원전 사고까지 겪은 일본이 '바다'를 주제로 한 박람회에 어떤 전시관을 운영할 것인지가 궁금했거든요. 그래서인지 일본관 외벽에 설치된 스크린에는 대지진 피해 주민들이 세계 각국의 지원에 대한 감사의 메시지가 상영되고 있어요.
(It is the Japan Pavilion that is the most curious pavilion. It is interesting that Japan, who experienced a tsunami and even an atomic power generator accident last year, will operate their pavilion in this exhibition. So, a speech of thanks is shown on a screen put on the outside wall of the Japan Pavilion for all the people around the world who helped victims of the earthquake.)

일본관 내부는 3개 전시 공간이 있어요. 하지만 핵심은 두 번째 공간. 쓰나미로 가족을 잃었으면서도 신비로운 '하얀 자전거'에 올라타 하늘과 바다를 날며 꿋꿋하게 어려움을 극복하는 소년 이야기가 나오지요. 주인공의 이름은 '카이'. 말 그대로 '바다'라는 이름을 가진 소년이에요. 애니메이션 강국다운 면모가 보이는 작품이지요.
(There are three display rooms in the Japan Pavilion. However, the most important room is the second one. In the second room, there is a story of a boy who overcomes difficulties riding a special "white bicycle" and flying through the sky and over the ocean. The name of this boy is "Kai". It literally means ocean. It is a work that shows aspects of powerful animation.)

"대서양도 그리 멀지 않네요."
("Atlantic ocean is not that far.")


그런데 대서양 연안국 중에서 왜 네덜란드를 선택했느냐고요? 네덜란드는 우리 여수와 떼놓을 수 없는 인연이 있거든요. 네덜란드관에서는 해양을 통해 우리나라를 처음으로 유럽에 소개한 하멜 표류기의 흔적이 우리를 기다리고 있거든요. 1653년 하멜이 제주도에 표류한 뒤 바다를 통해 이어진 한국과의 인연이 생생하게 담겨 있어요.
(So why did we choose the Netherlands out of many other countries near the Atlantic Ocean? It's because the Netherlands has a really essential relationship with Yeosu. In the Netherlands Pavilion, the traces of Hamel's drift diary, which introduced Korea to Europe for the first time, are awaiting us. They lively show the Ocean-based relationship between Korea and the Netherlands after Hamel drifted to Jeju Island in 1653.)

네덜란드관은 삼각주 개발과 활용의 다양한 예를 항공사진과 위성사진, 지도를 통해 보여 주고 있어요. 수세기 동안 물을 극복하며 살아온 감동의 스토리지요. 네덜란드만의 노하우가 담긴 최첨단 물 관리 기술이 매우 인상적이에요.
(The Netherlands Pavilion also shows developments and various uses of delta through aerial photographs, satellite images, and maps. It is such a touching story that rose from a life of overcoming water for centuries. Advanced water control technology, which includes unique Netherlands' system is very impressive.)

"해양베스트관에서 세계는 이렇게 하나 되고 있어요."
("The world is becoming one in the Ocean & Coast Best Practice Area as we see.")


국제관을 여행하고 나서 꼭 가볼 곳이 있어요. 세계가 하나 되는 곳, 해양·연안 분야에서 세계 최고의 기술 13가지가 만나는 체험형 아날로그 전시장, 해양베스트관이 바로 그곳이에요. 바다와 인류의 공존이라는 여수엑스포의 비전을 제시하는 심장부지요.
(After touring the International Pavilion, we have one more place to go. It is the Ocean & Coast Best Practice Area, which is a kind of an analogue exhibition hall where people can experience 13 high-tech skills in the field of the ocean and coast. It is the heart of the Yeosu Expo; the purpose is to provide the theme of coexistence of the Ocean and Humanity.)

특히, 세계 최고 성능을 자랑하는 유인 잠수정 신카이6500은 정말 놀라워요. 죽음이 연상되는 심해에서 화합합성을 통해 생물이 발생하고 있다는 것을 찾아냈으니까요. 해양베스트관에서는 이렇게 바다의 신비를 풀어가는 13가지의 최첨단 기술을 만나보실 수 있어요. 이렇게 하여 세계는 다시 하나가 되는 거예요.
(Especially, the manned submarine, Sinkai6500 of which we are proud of the high performance is really breath-taking. It's because it found that the living creatures can exist through the chemical synthesis in the deep sea only reminding us of the death. You can experience the very 13 technologies that can help understand the mystery of the deep sea in the Ocean & Coast Best Practice Area. We do hope the world will be the one again through this experience.)


지구 여행, 어땠어요? 여수 엑스포 티켓 하나면 지구 여행을 즐길 수 있다는 말이 실감나시지요? 바다는 지구가 태어나면서 지금까지 우리와 함께하였어요. 가끔 바다 때문에 사람들이 나누어지기도 했는데, 이제는 바다 때문에 인류가 하나 되고 있으니, 정말 고마운 바다죠. 21세기에 들어서면서 그 바다를 새롭게 만나는 출발점이 바로 여수예요. 생명의 기원인 바다와 하나 되고 싶으면 2012 여수엑스포로 오세요!
(How was the global travel? Now, can you feel that you can enjoy the global travel with the only one Yeosu Expo ticket? The sea has been with us since the earth created. Sometimes people were divided by the sea, however, mankinds are being united because of the sea these days. How thankful it is. As the turn of the 21st century, the starting point of meeting that sea is Yeosu. If you want to unite with the sea, the origin of life, come to 2012 YEOSU EXPO!)
