Alarming Number of Teens Addicted to the Internet

Four out of ten high school students in Seoul were found to be
addicted to Internet use, with the male students showing more
*severe *symptoms, a recent survey showed.

조사결과 서울 지역 고등학생 10명중 4명이 인터넷에 중독된 것으로
드러났으며 남학생이 더욱 심각한 증상을 보이는 것으로 나타났다.
These were the findings of a survey conducted among 396 freshmen
attending Seoul-based high schools by Suh Joo-hyun, a *graduate
student of the department of child development and family studies at Seoul National University.

As for the purpose of going on-line, 36.9 percent visited information sites, 29.6 percent went to entertainment and game-related sites and 28.2 percent chatted in cyberspace. Only a *scanty 1.1 percent used the Internet for academic studies.

인터넷에 접속하는 이유로 36.9%는 정보 사이트를, 29.6%는 오락 및 게임관련 사이트를 방문하기 위한 것이라고 답했으며 28.2%는 사이버상에서의 대화하기 위한 것이라고 답했다. 극소수인 1.1%만이 학문적 목적으로 인터넷을 이용한다고 응답했다.
While 59.5 percent of the respondents were *normal Internet users, 37.8 percent showed early stages of addiction and 2.7 percent were found to be seriously addicted, according to the survey.

초기 증세를 보였으며 2.7%는 심각하게 중독된 상태인 것으로 조사 결과

The term "Internet addiction" *refers to the *compulsive need to log on to the Internet to *ward off loneliness or complex feelings and emotions.

"인터넷 중독"이란 외로움과 열등의식을 잊기 위해 인터넷에 접속하려는 충동적 욕구를 지칭하는 용어이다.
Sufferers often become moody or restless when unable to log
on-line.
피해자들은 인터넷에 접속할 수 없을 땐 자주 우울하거나 불안한 증세를 보인다.
``People who grow greatly dependent on the Internet, who increase on-line usage and suffer from mental and physical pain when *deprived of Internet use, can be *categorized as Internet addicts,'' said Suh.

"인터넷 사용을 많이 하고, 사용할 수 없을 땐 정신적, 육체적 고통을 경험하는 등 인터넷 의존도가 높은 사람들이 인터넷 중독자의 범주에 들 수 있다"고 서양은 말했다.
A total of 44.2 percent of male students showed early stages of
on-line addiction, while 4.4 percent were in *critical stages. Female students were *relatively less addicted, with 31.6 percent being somewhat addicted and one percent showing serious levels of addiction.

남학생 44.2%가 인터넷 중독 초기 단계였으며 4.4%는 위험한 수준이었다. 여학생들은 비교적 중독 상태가 덜했지만 31.6%가 다소 중독된 것으로 보이며 1%는 심각한 중독 상태인 것으로 보인다.
