NTS Launches Tax Probe of Media Firms

국세청, 언론사들에 대한 세무 조사 착수
The National Tax Service (NTS) yesterday kicked off a 60-day tax
investigation of the 23 media companies for the first time in seven years.
국세청은 어제 7년만에 처음으로 23개 언론사들에 대한 60일간의 세무 조사를 시작했다.
About 400 tax officials, nearly half the staff of the NTS' investigation unit, were *dispatched to the media organizations yesterday.

NTS commissioner Ahn Jung-nam, said Monday at a National
Assembly committee that political motives were not involved in the tax probe. ``We have not received any outside pressure to *initiate the investigation,'' he said.

Small teams will look into business records covering 1995 to 1999, focusing on such key areas as accounting, *revenue, news paper sales, interest income, stock *transactions, *dividends, wages, bonuses and other personnel expenses, among others.

Investigators will also check financial transactions between parent companies and their *affiliates, and the *transfer of stocks between company owners and their relatives.

조사관들은 또한 모회사와 자회사간의 금융 거래 및 기업주와 관계인들 간의 주식 양도에 관한 조사를 진행하게 된다.
They will also probe paper suppliers such as Hansol Paper, Pan Asia Paper, Bowater-Halla, Sepoong and Daihan Paper. .
국세청은 또한 한솔제지, 팬 아시아 페이퍼, 보워터-한라 제지, 세풍과 대한 제지 등의 제지 업체에 관한 세무 조사도 실시하게 된다.
Under the tax regulation, many firms with yearly sales of more than 10 billion won (about $7.86 million) are subject to a regular probe at least once every five years. No tax probe has been conducted against Korean media organizations for the past seven years.
세법에 의하면 연간 매출이 100억원(786만달러) 이상인 기업들은 적어도 5년에 한번은 정기적으로 세무 조사를 받아야 하다고 되어 있다. 지난 7년 동안 국내 언론사들을 대상으로 실시된 세무 조사는 단 한번도 없었다.
Meanwhile, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) will also start a
separate investigation of 10 top newspapers and three major
broadcasting stations from Monday. A FTC spokesman said the probe would check whether there were illegal practices such as price *collusion in subscription fees and advertising rates.

한편, 공정 거래 위원회도 다음 월요일부터 10개 주요 신문사 및 주요 방송 3사에 대한 개별 조사를 시작할 예정이다. 공정위의 한 대변인은 정기 구독료 및 광고료 공모 등과 같은 불법 관행의 여부에 관해 점검할 것이라고 언급했다.
