<조선일보>는 '표절' 전문 신문인가?

안티조선 '우리모두'에서 <조선>의 '표절의혹' 거듭 제기

조선일보가 기사를 표절했다는 의혹이 제기됐다. 지난 22일자 조선일보 문화면(C7)에 실린 정재연 기자의 글 "[미술] '다빈치 드로잉'展 22일부터 뉴욕서 열려"가 미 뉴욕타임즈의 "Renaissance Genius as Compulsive Draftsman"(1.20)를 출처도 표기하지 않고 그대로 표절한 기사라는 것.

의혹을 제기한 아이디 'mathy'라는 네티즌은 안티조선 사이트로 유명한 '우리모두' 쟁점토론방에 올린 글에서 "뉴욕에서 열리는 전시회가 우리나라에 있는 사람들에게 무슨 소용이 있다고 이런 기사를 실었는지 모르겠다"고 꼬집으면서, 정 기자가 쓴 문제의 기사는 "조선일보의 후안무치함을 잘 보여주는 기사"라고 비난했다.

다음은 조선일보 정재연 기자의 기사와 뉴욕타임즈 기사의 비교. '

(1)"이번 전시를 기획한 카르멘 밤바흐 메트로폴리탄 미술관 큐레이터는 7년 전부터 다빈치의 드로잉을 빌려오기 위해 전세계 미술관을 부지런히 돌며 설득 작업을 벌여 왔다. 500년된 다빈치의 드로잉은 손상 위험이 크기 때문에 "미술관에게 다빈치 작품을 빌려달라는 것은 19세기식으로 말하면 귀족 가문을 찾아가 맏아들을 내놓으라는 격이었다"고 밤바흐씨는 말한다...."(조선)

"Since 1996 Carmen C. Bambach, a curator in the department of drawings and prints at the Metropolitan Museum, has traveled the world, persuading museums and private collectors to lend rare, often fragile Leonardo drawings for a comprehensive show of his drawings (and one painting),.... "Asking a museum for their Leonardos is like asking an aristocratic family in the 19th century for their firstborn," said Ms. Bambach,...."(NY Times)

(3)"다빈치의 드로잉은 빛이나 온도 변화에 워낙 민감하기 때문에 보통은 거의 전시되지 않는다고 한다. 일부 전문가들은 다빈치 드로잉의 장거리 이동을 결사 반대할 정도다. 메트로폴리탄 미술관도 소장중인 다빈치 드로잉 6점을 지난 몇년간 공개하지 않았다...."(조선)

(4)"이번 전시를 앞두고 메트로폴리탄 미술관이 펴낸 카탈로그는 무려 786페이지에 이른다. 학자 8명이 참여해 다빈치 아버지 연구부터 다빈치 글에 대한 문학적 분석까지 새로운 연구 결과를 발표했다. 미술관측은 화가·과학자·문인·발명가·철학자·교육자였던 위대한 천재를 입체적으로 보여주는 것은 곧 그가 남긴 방대한 드로잉이라고 설명한다..."(조선)

(6)"정식 교육을 받지 못한 다빈치는 라틴어를 할 줄 몰랐고 따라서 책 보다는 관찰을 통해 지식을 쌓았다. 왼손잡이었던 다빈치는 종이 한 귀퉁이에 낱말을 거꾸로 쓰는 등 눈속임을 즐기기도 했는데...."(조선)

"Self-taught, Leonardo is famous for never mastering Latin and for relying more on his powers of Observation than on learning from books.... He was famous for being left-handed, and in much of his work, his tiny handwriting is backward because he loved optical tricks and wrote from right to left using a mirror,...."(NY Times)

그러나 조선일보의 표절 의혹은 정재연 기자에게만 국한된 것이 아닌 듯 보인다. 앞서 정 기자의 표절의혹을 제기한 mathy님은 지난 16일자 조선일보 문화면에 김용운 기자가 쓴 "'빈 필' 지휘한 아마추어 말러狂"이라는 기사 또한 명백한 표절이라고 지적했다.

최근 비엔나 필하모닉과 관련되어 구설수에 올랐던 두 사람 Gilbert Kaplan(말러의 '교향곡 2번'을 지휘환 아마추어 지휘자)과 Ursula Plaichinger(사상 처음으로 영입된 여성 현악 단원?)을 소개하면서, U.Plaichinger의 경우는 김 기자가 그 출처를 밝혔지만 앞부분의 G.Kaplan은 출처를 명시하지 않았다는 것.(The Guardian, "One-hit wonder, 2003.1.7) 다음은 김 용운 기자의 기사와 The Guardian의 기사를 비교 정리한 것이다.

(1)"카플란의 음악수업은 어려서 익힌 피아노가 전부다.... 그가 사용하는 지휘봉과 악보도 말러가 쓰던 것. 심지어 그의 아내가 낀 반지도 말러가 아내 알마에게 준 것이다...."(조선)

"His musical training was limited to some childhood piano lessons, ...he owns the original score of Mahler Two, his wife Lena wears the only ring that Mahler ever gave to his wife Alma, and he is conducting with Mahler's own baton..."(The Guardian)

(2)"그는 1982년 아메리칸 심포니를 돈을 주고 사서 뉴욕 에이버리 피셔홀에서 말러 '교향곡 2번'을 처음 지휘했다. 이때 그는 '티켓을 팔지 말고 객석을 초대 관객으로 채울 것' '누구도 리뷰를 쓰지 말 것' 등의 조건을 내걸었다. 그러나 비평가 2인이 약속을 깨고 호평(好評)의 리뷰를 뉴욕타임스 등에 실었다. 이후 여러 오케스트라가 카플란을 초청, 그는 지금까지 50개 오케스트라와 100회 남짓 이 곡을 연주했다. 카플란이 88년 런던심포니를 지휘한 음반(LP·CD)은 20만장 팔렸다. 카플란은 이번 빈필하모닉과의 녹음 외에도 올해 영국에서 할레·필하모니아 오케스트라를 차례로 지휘, 이 곡을 연주할 예정이다..."(조선)
