Lunar New Year's Day to Offer Rare Chance to Experience Folk Culture

Along with "Chusok," Korea's Thanksgiving day, "Sollal," or lunar New Year's Day, is one of Korea's two important traditional holidays.
한국의 추수감사절에 해당되는 추석과 함께 음력설인 설날은 한국의 전통적으로 가장 중요한 명절이다.
Although many young Koreans celebrate the onset of the new year on Jan. 1, older people here don't really feel that another new year has come until they celebrate Sollal.
많은 젊은이들은 신년초 1월 1일을 기념하지만 한국의 나이 많은 든 사람들은 설날이 올 때 까지 신년의 기분을 느끼지 못한다.
Sollal usually arrives in early February, but this year it will come a little earlier, falling on Jan. 24.
설날은 통상 2월초에 오는데 금년에는 그보다 일찍 1월 24일에 해당된다.
According to police estimates, about 32 million people across the nation are expected to head for their hometowns to meet their families and relatives during the Sollal holiday, which span from Jan. 23 to 25.
경찰추정에 따르면, 전국적으로 약 3천2백만명이 설날동안인 1월 23일부터 25일 사이에 가족과 친척을 만나기위해 고향으로 향할 것이라고 한다.
Each year, cars and buses head for home, bursting at the seams with passengers and gifts, and the highways are packed with traffic jams that bring to mind evacuation or disaster scenes.
매년 선물을 가득 실은 승객들이 승용차와 버스에 타고 고향으로 향하는 행렬로 고속도로는 교통지옥을 연출하는 장면은 대탈출 혹은 피난광경을 연상하게 된다.
The reason people are so eager to get home despite the terrible travel conditions is due to the Korean custom of greeting the new year with their relatives.
이런 극심한 교통지옥속에서도 고향집을 찾는 이유는 그들의 친척과 신년 인사를 나누는 전통적인 관습때문이다.
On Sollal morning, the first thing families do is perform "charye," a ceremonial ritual honoring deceased ancestors. This is the most important part of the day, as Sollal was originally a sacred day when ancestors and descendants come together, strengthening spiritual family ties between them.
설날아침에 가족들이 제일 먼저 하는 일은 돌아가신 조상을 추모하는 "차례"를 지내는 것이다. 이 차례는 설날이 전통적으로 조상과 후손들이 함께 만나서 가족간의 정신적인 유대를 다지는 날이기 때문에 가장 중요한 행사가 된다.
