GENEVA (Yonhap) _ Switzerland will provide North Korea with beef
that has been *certified free of mad cow disease _ the same quality beef it sells to Swiss consumers, a spokesman for the Swiss Foreign Ministry said Monday.

The spokesman noted that the Swiss government has offered beef as food aid to North Korea on three occasions since 1997, saying the aid has no connection to the ongoing talks between North Korea and Germany on the provision of German beef to North Korea.

북한에 쇠고기를 제공해 왔으며, 이번 지원은 현재 진행중인 북한과

With consumer confidence in German beef *waning in the wake of
the mad cow disease outbreak there, Germany is currently negotiating with North Korea to provide the *famine-stricken country with *surplus beef that is piling up.

광우병으로 인해 독일산 쇠고기에 대한 소비자 신뢰가 감소됨에 따라
독일은 현재 기아에 시달리고 있는 북한에 여분의 쇠고기를 제공하는
문제를 놓고 협상 중에 있다.
The spokesman said that the Swiss beef will be offered to North
Korean kindergartens, nurseries, schools and children's hospitals, adding that Swiss *humanitarian aid officials residing in North Korea will monitor the beef's *distribution to ensure that the beef will go to the intended recipients.

스위스산 쇠고기는 북한의 유치원, 탁아소, 학교, 소아 병원 등에 제공될 것이며 북한에 거주하고 있는 스위스의 인도주의 구호 단체 관계자들이 이 쇠고기가 원래 계획된 수혜자들에게 제대로 제공되는지를 확인하기 위해 분배 과정을 감시하게 될 것이라고 대변인은 언급했다.
A Swiss agricultural ministry official said that his ministry has already signed a contract to purchase calves, from 12 to 14 months old, that are scheduled to be (slaughtered as part of the aid package.

스위스 농업부 관계자는 이미 북한과 12개월에서 14개월 정도된 송아지 구매 계약에 서명했으며 이는 구호 물품의 일부로서 도살되기로 예정된 소들이었다고 언급했다.
The official said that beef to be sent to the North would be tested for mad cow disease by Swiss authorities.
북한에 보내질 쇠고기는 스위스 당국에 의해 광우병 검사를 받게 될
것이라고 그 관계자는 언급했다.
The Swiss government, however, does not *require all beef sold in its markets to be tested for the disease, which is *fatal to humans. It noted that Switzerland has established a variety of *inspection systems since 1990, when the disease broke out for the first time.
