Chang's Departure Stirs Political Circles

With teary-eyed family members embracing each other across the border after a half century of separation, ruling and opposition parties in Yoido yesterday *squabbled over the sudden departure of Chang Choong-sik, president of the Korea National Red Cross (KNRC), to Japan.

The main opposition Grand National Party (GNP) contended that his sudden departure was choreographed in a usual scheme by the government to *appease North Korea.

제1야당인 한나라당은 장총재의 갑작스런 출국은 정부가 북한을 달래기 위해 종전처럼 계획한 것이라고 주장했다.
GNP spokesman Kwon Chul-hyun said in a statement, ``Apparently KNRC president Chang was forced to leave Seoul one day before the family reunion took place. The case *epitomizes the government's appeasing attitude toward the North. The government should reveal who made Chang depart for Japan and seriously review its policies toward North Korea.''

한나라당의 권철현 대변인은 "분명히 장총재는 이산가족 상봉 하루전에 강제로 서울을 떠난 것이다. 이 사건은 정부가 취하고 있는 대북 저자세의 전형을 보여주는 것이다. 정부는 누가 장총재를 일본으로 출국시켰는지 밝혀야 하며 대북 정책에 대해 심각히 검토해야 할 것이다."라고 성명서를 통해 언급했다.
Refraining from making a formal statement, however, the ruling
Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) *reiterated its earlier position that the two Koreas should continue their reconciliation by respecting each other's systems.

그러나 민주당은 공식 언급을 삼가면서 남북은 서로의 체제를 존중함으로써 현재의 화해 무드를 계속 이어나갈 것이라는 이전 입장을 재차 강조했다.
MDP spokesman Park Byeong-seug *declined to *comment on the issue, saying, ``I can't say anything for now because I don't exactly know why he suddenly left for Japan.''

민주당 박병석 대변인은 "장총재가 왜 갑자기 일본으로 출국했는지 정확히 알지 못하기 때문에 지금은 뭐라 말할 수 없다."면서 이 문제에 관한 언급을 피했다.
An MDP lawmaker, requesting *anonymity, said that Chang shouldn't have made such insulting remarks on North Korea in an interview with the Monthly Chosun. But he added, ``North Korea should not overreact too much so that the South Korean Red Cross faces difficulties at home.''

익명을 요한 민주당의 한 의원은 장총재가 월간 조선과 가진 인터뷰에서 북한에 관한 그런 모욕적인 언급은 하지 말았어야 했다고 말했다. 그러나 "북한은 너무 지나치게 과잉 반응해서 대한 적십자가 국내에서 어려운 입장에 처하게 해서는 안될 것이다."라고 덧붙였다.
Meanwhile, the splinter party United Liberal Democrats (ULD)
criticized the government for being *subservient to North Korea in inter-Korean matters. ``It is an unseemly sight that the head of the KNRC, the host organization for family reunions in Seoul, can't attend any welcoming ceremony,'' it said.

한편 소수파 자민련은 남북 문제에 있어 정부가 북한에 대해 취하고 있는 비굴함을 비난했다. 그리고 "이산가족 상봉의 서울측 주최기관인 대한 적십자사의 총재가 환영식 한군데도 참석할 수 없다는 것은 꼴사나운 일이다."라고 언급했다.
