President Expresses *Optimism on Korea's Economic Future

President Kim Dae-jung yesterday expressed optimism about the
country's economic future in a meeting with Citigroup Inc. co-chairman Sanford Weill during the latter's *courtesy call yesterday.

김대중 대통령은 어제 청와대를 예방한 씨티 그룹의 샌포드 웨일 회장과 가진 회담에서 국가 경제의 미래에 관해 낙관적 견해를 표명했다.
``Korea will become a leading nation in the Asia-Pacific region once it successfully completes the ongoing second round of corporate and financial restructuring,'' President Kim told the Citigroup chairman, observing that Korea is faced with such *adverse external challenges as rising international oil prices and the *fluctuations of U.S. stock markets.

한국은 현재 국제 유가 상승과 미국 주식 시장 변동과 같은 불리한 외부의 도전에 직면하고 있다고 본다면서 "한국은 진행중인 2차 기업 및 금융 부문의 구조조정만 성공적으로 마친다면 아시아-태평양 연안국 가운에 선두 국가가 될 것이다."라고 김 대통령은 씨티 그룹 회장에게 말했다.
The President said that Korea completed the first round of
restructuring, which laid the *groundwork for economic recovery from the November 1997 financial crisis.

한국은 1차 구조조정을 마쳤으며 이는 1997년 11월의 금융 위기로부터 경제를 회생시키는 토대가 되었다고 대통령은 언급했다.
``The second round is aimed at *eliminating the remaining uncertainty clouding the country's financial sector,'' he said.
