Beef *Consumption Falls Sharply Amid Unfounded Mad Cow Scare

According to Agriculture and Forestry Minister Han Kap-soo, there has not been a single case of made cow disease in Korea. In fact, there is no proof whatsoever that there has ever been a reported case of the sickness.
한갑수 농림부 장관은 국내에서는 단 한 건의 광우병도 발견되지 않았다고 언급했다. 사실, 광우병으로 보고된 사례가 있었다는 증거조차 없다.
Still, the consumption of beef has fallen *drastically within the past week, with even some *distributors of Korean beef complaining of a 40- percent reduction in sales.

According to dairy product experts, the possibility of a domestic consumer getting *infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), the technical term for mad cow disease, is very, very, very low.

유제품 전문가에 따르면 국내 소비자들이 소해면상뇌증(BSE)-광우병을 지칭하는 전문용어-에 감염될 가능성은 매우 낮다고 한다.
``Our study shows that there has not been a single case of the
variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and we doubt that there will ever be,'' said one specialist.
"조사에 따르면 국내에서는 변형 크로이츠펠트-야코브병(vCJD)의 사례가 한 건도 없었음을 보여주고 있는데 사람들은 광우병이 존재할 것이라고 의심하고 있다"고 한 전문가는 언급했다.
Nevertheless, the ministry has set up a special pan-government task force for dealing with all aspects of mad cow disease which is currently ``*sweeping'' through Europe.

그럼에도 불구하고 농림부는 현재 유럽 전역을 "휩쓸고" 있는 광우병의 모든 것을 취급하는 특별 대책 위원회를 구성했다.
Ministry officials confirmed yesterday that there has not been a
single case of vCJD and that *extensive *inspections of domestic
cattle have proven so over the past five years.

``There is concern that BSE could have spread by giving domestic
cattle *tainted animal feed, but studies have confirmed that none of them were *contaminated with BSE,'' the expert explained.

"국내 소들에게 오염된 동물 사료를 주어 광우병이 확산되었을 것이라는 우려가 있지만 조사결과 광우병에 걸린 소들은 한 마리도 없었음이 입증되었다."라고 전문가는 설명했다.
While mad cow disease is still a mysterious disease, it is *fatal and there is no known cure. It broke out in Britain, where some 80 persons have been infected.

As far as is known, BSE contaminates cows with a protein derivative called prion which takes a couple of years to crawl into the brain, causing *paralysis and eventual death.

알려진 바에 따르면 광우병은 소에게서 발견되는 프리온이라고 불리는 단백질이 변형되어 발생하는데 수년만에 뇌속으로 침투해 마비를 일으켜 결국에 사망에 이르는 병이다.
The symptoms are similar for humans and the prion is known to take some five to 10 years to cause severe damage to the brain, leading to death.
사람들에게 나타나는 증상은 유사하며 이 변형된 프리온이 뇌에 치명적인 손상을 입혀 사망에 이르게 하는데 까지는 약 5년에서 10년 정도 걸리는 것으로 알려져 있다.
``In Korea, there have been some deaths caused by CJD, not vCJD,
but nothing is confirmed yet and tests have shown that there has not been a single case of vCJD, the disease that we should be concerned about,'' Han said.
"국내에서는 vCJD가 아닌 CJD로 사망한 경우가 있었으나 아직 확증된 바는 없다. 그리고 조사 결과, 우리가 우려하고 있는 광우병, 즉 vCJD로 밝혀진 경우는 아직 없다."고 한 장관은 언급했다.

Still, the mad cow disease scare has caused consumers to shy away from beef of all types, domestic or foreign, and some supermarkets have complained of a 60-percent decline in the sales of chilled imported beef.
``All the explanations that there is nothing wrong with products
which are sold here are doing little good. Sales are down sharply and we expect the trend to continue for the time being,'' one salesperson said.
