영어도 '실전 연수' 해야
``It's time for Korean students to take road training.''
"지금은 한국 학생들이 실전 연수를 받아야 할 때다."
That statement is not about a driving test, but rather about learning English.
이 말은 운전 면허 시험이 아니라 오히려 영어를 배우는데 해당되는 말이다.
A Korean man who has practiced law in the U.S. for 15 years gave that tip to *emphasize the importance of using the language in everyday situations.
* emphasize : accent, stress : 강조하다
미국에서 15년 동안 법률 사무소를 개업하고 있는 한 한국인이 일상 생활을 통해 언어를 사용하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 강조하기 위해 이렇게 조언했다.
``Many Koreans are in an English learning *frenzy these days. While I have lived in America for 30 years, I have seen many Korean students who have crossed the Pacific with the aim of mastering the English language. But they just continued their *theoretical studies in the corners of small classrooms,'' said Chang Soo-kil yesterday, wrapping up his three-day visit to Korea.

"요즘 많은 한국인들이 영어 배우기 열풍에 싸여 있다. 30년 동안 미국에 살면서 나는 영어를 마스터하기 위해 태평양을 건너온 수많은 한국 학생들을 봐왔다. 그러나 그들은 단지 작은 교실의 한쪽 구석에서 이론적 공부만을 계속하고 있을 뿐이다." 3일간의 한국 방문을 마치면서 장수길 씨가 어제 한 말이다.
The 48-year-old lawyer went to U.S. when he was 16 years old and
experienced a lot of *hardships learning English himself.
* hardship : something that causes suffering or privation : 고난, 고생
올해 48세인 이 변호사는 16살 되던 해 미국으로 건너가 혼자 영어를 배우는데 많은 고생을 했다고 한다.
``When I went there for the first time, I didn't even talk to other students at school. I only read English textbooks, just like Korean students do here. After a while, I made an American friend. From then on, I visited many places, like fitness clubs and shops, where I experienced U.S culture and practiced what I learned at school. I took road training, so to speak, getting away from theory-centered study,'' Chang said.
"처음 미국에 갔을 때 나는 학교에서 심지어 다른 학생들한테 말 한마디 건네지 못했다. 한국 학생들이 국내에서 그렇듯 나는 단지 영어 교과서를 읽을 줄만 알았다. 얼마 후 미국 친구를 사귀게 되었는데 그때부터 나는 체육관이나 쇼핑센터등 많은 곳을 돌아다니게 되었고 그곳에서 바로 미국의 문화를 경험하고 학교에서 배운 것을 활용할 수 있었다. 나는 실전연수를 받은 것이다. 말하자면 이론 중심의 학교에서 벗어난 것이다."라고 장 씨는 말했다.
Every year, tens of thousands of people get on flights bound for
English- speaking countries to learn the most influential language in this era, which is believed to be one of most important key factors to success in Korean society.
매년 수만명의 사람들이 이 시대에 가장 영향력 있는 언어이며 한국
사회에서 성공할 수 있는 가장 중요한 요인이라 믿고 있는 영어를 배우기 위해 영어권 국가로 향하는 비행기에 오른다.
Their efforts, however, seem not to be so fruitful.
그러나 그들의 노력은 별 성과가 없어 보인다.
``I took a six-month English language course in the U.S., pouring in all the money I earned through my part-time job. But I regret the decision. The class I took there was not much different from the one I took in Korea.
"나는 아르바이트로 번 돈을 모두 쏟아가며 미국에서 6개월간의 어학
연수를 받았다. 그러나 지금은 그 결정을 후회하고 있다. 그곳에서 받았던 수업은 한국에서 받았던 수업과 별반 차이가 없었다."
