Just one day after President Kim Dae-jung's call for restraint in the *brewing infighting of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP), the controversy seems to have been contained, at least for the time being.

김대중 대통령이 민주당의 내분 움직임에 자제를 요구한지 하루만에 적어도 일단은 당내 논쟁이 가라앉은 것으로 보인다.
Sharing the importance of rallying behind party banner, members of the Supreme Council yesterday reached a consensus that they need to put the controversy behind them.
당내 단합의 중요성을 공감하고 어제 최고 위원들은 이번 논쟁을 뒤로 미룰 필요성이 있다는 합의에 도달했다.
Rep. Chung Dong-young, who touched off the row by calling on Kwon Noh-kap, a member of the Supreme Council, to distance from politics, attempted to prevent the controversy from being spiraled out of control.
권노갑 최고 의원의 정치권 2선 후퇴를 요구하여 내분을 유발한 당사자인 정동영 의원은 이번 논란이 통제 불능으로 악화되지 않도록 노력하는 모습을 보였다.
During a session of the Supreme Council, Chung reportedly expressed his regrets that his remarks calling for the exit of Kwon from politics are being seen as signs of internal row.
최고 위원회의에서 정의원은 권위원의 정계 퇴진을 요구한 자신의 발언이 당에 내분이 있는 것처럼 비춰진 것에 대해 유감을 표명한 것으로 전해졌다.
``I said what I have in mind and my position has not changed at all,'' Chung said. ``I do not want my comment being seen as internal row. I will keep silence.''
"할 말은 이미 다 했으며 내 입장에는 전혀 변함이 없다."고 정의원은 말했다. "내 발언이 당에 내분이 있는 것처럼 보이는 것을 원치 않기 때문에 더 이상 말하지 않겠다."
In the meantime, Kwon, who is widely known as right hand man of
President Kim, issued a statement calling for unity of party's rank and file lawmakers.
한편, 김 대통령의 최측근으로 널리 알려져 있는 권최고위원은 당내
의원들의 단합을 호소하는 성명서를 발표했다.
``I am sorry for making the public and the members of the ruling MDP concerned over the latest controversy,'' said Kwon.
"최근의 논란으로 국민과 민주당 의원들의 우려를 일으켜 죄송하다."고 권위원은 말했다.
Kwon also denied *rampant media reports that the controversy *pitted Kwon and Rep. Hahn Hwa-kap. ``There was no ``dispute'' between Hahn and me,'' Kwon said.

권위원은 또한 이번 논란이 자신과 한화갑 의원을 갈등을 돌출시켰다는 언론의 보도를 부인했다. "한의원과 나는 어떤 "다툼"도 없었다."라고 권위원은 말했다.

For his part, Hahn also denied the media speculations that he was behind of the conspiracy aimed at pushing Kwon off the political sidelines.
Hahn stressed on the early containment of the row.
``We need to demonstrate the unity of our party by calling first-term lawmakers to exercise restraints,'' said Hahn who flew to Japan to attend a ceremony honoring President Kim's winning of the Nobel Peace Prize. ``We also have to lend our support to President Kim to revamp the party after the end of the regular Assembly session.''
