Historian Slams Lukewarm Attitude Toward Japan's History Textbook

A historian yesterday urged the government to use the latest
controversy over Japanese history textbooks to *redefine the
relationship between the two countries.

한 역사 학자가 최근의 일본 역사 교과서 논란을 들어 한일 양국 관계를
재규정하라고 정부에 촉구했다.
The scholar also called for *countermeasures to deal with Japan's
much- criticized move.

이 학자는 또한 비난받아 마땅한 일본의 이런 움직임에 대처할 적절한
대응책을 마련하라고 주장했다.
``This case proves that Korea's efforts for a better relationship have
been fruitless since the 1965 *normalization of *bilateral ties with
Japan, and that Kim Dae-jung government's *conciliatory policy
toward the country failed to put to rest the *tragedies during the
colonial rule,'' said Lee Sin-cheol, director-general of the Institute
for Korea Historical Studies.

대한 역사 연구회의 이신철 사무 총장은 "이번 사건은 1965년 한일 국교
정상화 이후 일본과 보다 개선된 관계를 유지하려는 한국의 노력이 헛된
것이었으며, 김대중 정부의 대일 화해 정책이 과거 식민 통치의 비극을
해소하지 못했음을 증명하는 것이다."라고 언급했다.
