Civic Group *Slammed For Requesting Huge Sums of Money From State Firms

One of the leading civil watchdogs in Korea is under attack for

국내 굴지의 시민 감독기구중의 한 곳이 국영 기업체에 막대한 금액을 헌납하라고 부추겨 비난을 사고 있다.
The *Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice (CCEJ) was found to have requested huge amounts of contributions _ as much as 10
million won _ from five government-invested companies for a
fund-raising event held in late November. The incident is causing a stir as the requests were made at a time when CCEJ was conducting an *inspection into the *expediency funds of 13 public companies, ultimately raising questions regarding the group's *integrity.

경제정의 실천 시민연대가 5개 정부 투자 기업에 11월말에 열렸던 행사 기금 조성 명목으로 약 1,000만원에 달하는 막대한 액수의 기부금을 요청한 사실이 밝혀졌다. 이 요구는 경실련이 13개 공기업에 대한 판공비 감사를 실시하던 기간에 이루어져 동요를 일으키고 있으며 궁극적으로는 경실련에 대한 도덕성에 의문을 갖게 하고 있다.
CCEJ had sent letters to five government-invested companies on
Nov. 20, asking for financial support for the group's fundraiser on Nov. 29. Among them, CCEJ asked three agencies _ Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea National Tourism Organization and Korea National Housing Corporation (KNHC) _ for an amount of 10 million won.

단체의 자금 담당자들에게 재정적 지원을 요청했다. 경실련은 이들 중 한국전력과 한국 관광 공사, 대한 주택 공사 등 세 곳에는 1000만원씩을 요구했다.
A month earlier, CCEJ asked for the expediency fund records of 13 government-invested companies, including the five in question, and then criticized the agencies upon disclosure of their findings on Dec.
28, claiming that ``public companies have *squandered away
precious tax payer's money by using public funds without clear
standards for use.''

이보다 한달 전에, 경실련은 문제의 5개 기업을 포함한 13개 공기업에 대한 판공비 내역을 요청해 12월 28일 결과를 공개하고 "공기업들은 분명한 사용 기준도 없이 귀중한 국민들의 돈을 공적 자금으로 유용함으로써 함부로 낭비하고 있다."고 주장하면서 기관들을 비난했었다.
``KEPCO and KNHC each gave five million won in donations for the
charity event, while Korea National Oil Corporation provided 2 million won,'' said a CCEJ spokesman. This amounts to 12 percent of the total 103 million won that were collected through the fundraiser. About 10 private companies contributed a total of 47 million won, while the rest of the money was donated individually, according to the civil group.
"한전과 주택공사는 자선행사에 각각 500만원을 석유개발공사는 200만원을 자선행사에 기부했다."고 경실련 대변인이 말했다. 이 금액은 모금목표액인 1억 300만원의 12%에 불과한 것이었다. 약 10개의 개인기업이 모두 4700만원을 기부했으며 나머지 금액은 개인들이 낸 금액이라고 한다.
