트럼프 대통령, '이민자는 동물' 망언?

트럼프가 또 이민자를 동물 취급하는 망언을 했다는 보도가 나왔다. 내외신은 트럼프 미 대통령이 아래와 같이 말했다고 보도했다.

"여러분은 이 사람들이 얼마나 나쁜지 믿지 못할 것이다. 이들은 사람이 아니다. 이들은 동물이고 우리는 그들을 나라 밖으로 나가도록 하고 있다."

그의 망언(?)애 대해, 민주당 등 미국 사회 안팎에서, 온라인 공간에서 그의 발언에 대한 비난이 이어지고 있다.

재러드 폴리스 하원의원(민주·콜로라도)은 "이민자들은 사람이다. 범죄자도, 마약 거래자도, 강간범도 아니다. 그들은 사람이다"고 말했다.

제리 브라운 캘리포니아 주지사(민주당)는 "트럼프 대통령은 이민과 범죄, 캘리포니아 법에 대해 거짓말을 하고 있다"고 비난했다.

다이앤 파인스타인 상원의원(민주 캘리포니아)는, "이민자들은 "동물"이 아니다. 대통령의 언급은 매우 공격적이었으다. 인종 차별적이었다. 이민자들은 우리 가족과 친구들이며 우리나라에 눈에 두드러진 기여를 하고 있다."고 말했다.

사실 확인

그런데 트럼프의 이민자를 혐오한 그의 발언은 사실일까? 사실이라면, 그는 어떤 맥락에서 도대체 어떤 말을 한 것일까? 그런데 그의 발언은 이민자에 대한 혐오 발언이 아니었다.

문제의 발언이 담긴 대화는 아래와 같다.

위의 대화에서도 볼 수 있는 것처럼, 트럼프의 동물 지칭 발언은 이민자 전체를 염두에 둔 것으로 볼 수 없다. 단순하게 표현하면, 그가 이민자 전체를 지칭하여 동물로 언급하지 않았다. MS-13갱단을 지칭하여 언급한 것이다.

그러나 한국 언론은 외신을 인용하면서, 외신 기사 자체의 전체 맥락을 확인도 안하고, 적당하게 재구성하고, 트럼프 대통령의 발언 자체를 확인하는 사실 확인의 수고를 게을리 한 것으로 보인다. 결과적으로 트럼프의 발언을 오역하고, 결과적으로 가짜 뉴스를 퍼뜨리고 있다.

ICE was in there doing their work in a safe, controlled, environment. And then, the initiatives started happening - the Trust Act, the Truth Act, and finally, SB 54, the Values Act. And that is causing us all kinds of turmoil.
So here we are, stuck in the middle, trying to decide. We have federal law, we have state law. And that's why I welcomed Attorney General Sessions's lawsuit, because that will provide us the clarity that we need and direction that we need. What do we do? Because here we are.
And I appreciated Mr. Homan and ICE. We had a great relationship; we still do. But now ICE is the only law enforcement agency that cannot use our databases to find the bad guys. They cannot come in and talk to people in our jail, unless they reach a certain threshold. They can't do all kinds of things that other law enforcement agencies can do. And it's really put us in a very bad position."

"And we're suing on that, and we're working hard, and I think it will all come together, because people want it to come together. It's so ridiculous. The concept that we're even talking about is ridiculous. We'll take care of it, Margaret. We'll win."

"Thank you. There could be an MS-13 gang member I know about — if they don't reach a certain threshold, I cannot tell ICE about it."

"We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in — and we're stopping a lot of them — but we're taking people out of the country. You wouldn't believe how bad these people are.
