Myongdong Cathedral Bans Rallies in Its Compound

Political *dissidents, pro-democracy activists and striking workers will no longer be able to seek *refuge at Myongdong Cathedral as the church decided to ban all unauthorized protests and sit-ins inside its compound.

결정함으로써 반체제 인사와 민주화 운동가, 파업 노동자들은 이제 더 이상 명동성당을 피난처로 삼을 수 없을 것으로 보인다.
Myongdong Cathedral sent a notice to Chunggu Police Station
yesterday, stating that those wanting to hold rallies on church grounds must receive *prior *consent from the cathedral.

명동성당은 어제 성당내에서 집회를 갖고자 하는 모든 이들은 성당측의 사전 동의를 구해야 한다는 내용의 통지서를 중구 경찰서에 보냈다.
``We request that the police *permit only the demonstrations that are approved by the church when various organizations register to hold rallies at Myongdong Cathedral,'' read the notice written in the name of Father Kim Song-man, co-chief priest of the cathedral.

"우리는 여러 단체들이 명동성당에 집회 신청을 할 때는 성당의 승인을 받은 시위만을 허용하도록 경찰에 요청했다." 라고 성당의 공동 수석 신부인 김성남 신부가 말했다.
``We ask that police block protestors and their various materials and *equipment from entering the church, to prevent unauthorized demonstrations from being held,'' said Kim in the notice.

"우리는 허가를 받지 않은 집회가 열리는 것을 막기 위해, 경찰에
시위대들과 여러 물품 및 장비들의 교회 반입을 막아달라고 요청했다."고 통지서에서 김 신부는 말했다.
``Myongdong Cathedral has long suffered from the rallies of various interest groups, and the recent protests by Korea Telecom workers have given a deep wound to the church,'' he said.
"명동성당은 오랜 세월동안 여러 이익 단체들의 집회에 시달려왔으며
최근의 한국 통신 근로자들의 시위로 깊은 상처를 입었다."고 그는 말했다.
The church announced on Saturday that it would no longer permit any sit-in protests or long-term demonstrations within their facilities. The cathedral has served as a *sanctuary for the politically *oppressed since the 1970s.

교회측은 토요일 더 이상은 당내에서 연좌 농성과 장기 집회를 허가하지 않을 것이라고 발표했다. 명동성당은 1970년대부터 정치적으로 억압받는 자들을 위한 성역의 역할을 해왔다.
Paek Nam-yong, chief priest of the cathedral said the recent
demonstrations *tarnished the image of the church, as well as cauing *property damage and inconvenience to people wishing to attend church services.

성당의 수석 신부인 백남용 신부는 최근의 집회로 재산 피해와 예배에 참석하고자 하는 신도들의 불편함은 물론 교회 이미지가 많이 손상되었다고 말했다.
But he said they would still allow short-term, simple rallies on the grounds.
그러나 당내에서의 단기 집회와 단순 시위는 허용할 것이라고 백신부는 언급했다.
