Doctor's Slip of Pen Kills Gout *Patient

A *physician and a pharmacist were arrested on charges of
carelessly writing and filling an incorrect *prescription that led to
their patient's death, the local police here said Tuesday.

한 지방 경찰서가 화요일 잘못된 처방을 써주어 환자를 사망하게 한 의사와
약사를 구속했다.
The police said a 30-year-old physician identified only by his family
name Lee and a pharmacist named Park were arrested Tuesday on
suspicions of professional negligence resulting in death.
경찰은 이씨로 알려진 30대 의사와 박모 약사가 화요일 직무 태만으로
환자를 사망하게 한 혐의로 구속되었다고 밝혔다.
According to police, Lee incorrectly prescribed the dosage of a
certain virulent *medication to a 50-year-old female patient suffering
from gout last September. He intended the patient to take one pill
eight times a day, but actually wrote "eight pills, eight times daily."

경찰에 따르면 의사 이씨는 지난 9월 통풍으로 고생하던 50대 여성에게
독극성 진통제의 복용법을 잘못 처방한 것으로 드러났다. 이씨는 하루
1알씩 여덟차례로 처방할 생각이었으나 실제로는 "하루 8차례, 8알씩"으로
기록한 것이다.
The prescription was subsequently filled as written by the pharmacist
Park, who neglected her obligation to question the *validity of this
*exorbitant dosage, the police said. The medication is usually
prescribed in a quantity not exceeding five pills a day, but the female
patient was taking, upon prescription, eight tablets a day because her
conditions was rather serious.

약사 박씨는 처방전에 쓰여 있는 대로 약물을 조제했으나 이 터무니없는
복용법의 타당성에 대한 확인 의무를 게을리한 혐의라고 경찰은 전했다. 그
진통제는 복용량에 있어 일반적으로 하루 5알을 초과하지 않도록 처방되어
있으나 그 여성 환자는 다소 심각한 상태였기 때문에 처방대로 하루에
8알씩 8차례 복용한 것이다.
She died following severe *bouts of *diarrhea and *vomiting that
lasted four days after she took 64 pills in a single day as the *faulty
prescription indicated.

그녀는 잘못된 처방에 따라 하루 64알을 복용한 뒤 4일동안 수 차례의
설사와 구토 끝에 결국 사망했다.
